SOE Directive: Operational Induction. Physical endurance, fieldcraft, and psychological hardening protocols follow.
Folder: Training Pathway
Phase 01 — Selection
"Location: Wanborough Manor, Surrey. Duration: 2–3 weeks. Preliminary assessment under cover of an ordinary country-house course — cross-country runs, basic map reading, initial weapons familiarisation, and close observation of candidates in unguarded moments, including over drinks in the mess, where indiscretion showed faster than it did on the assault course. Roughly a third of candidates did not proceed beyond this stage."
Phase 02 — Paramilitary and CommandoÂ
"Location: Arisaig and the surrounding Special Training Schools, Scottish Highlands. Duration: 3–4 weeks. Small arms instruction, unarmed combat and close-quarter fighting, demolitions, railway and bridge sabotage, fieldcraft, and night marches across open country in all weather. The physical elimination stage of the course — a further third of candidates typically did not complete it."
Phase 03 — Parachute Training
"Location: Dunham House and Fulshaw Hall, Cheshire, near RAF Ringway. Duration: approximately 1 week. The shortest and most concentrated stage. Ground instruction in landing falls, followed by jumps from a static balloon and then from aircraft, building to a qualifying total of five descents, including one at night."
Phase 04 — Tradecraft
"Location: Beaulieu, Hampshire. Duration: 3–4 weeks. Known within the organisation simply as 'the finishing school.' Agents learned to live a cover story rather than recite one — dead letter boxes, surveillance and counter-surveillance, forged papers, safe-blowing, disguise, interrogation resistance, and clandestine signals procedure using the B2 wireless set and one-time pad ciphers."
Phase 05 — MaritimeÂ
"Location: Hayling Island, Hampshire. Duration: several weeks, including a final week's work with a submarine. Silent canoe assembly and handling, submarine launch and recovery, limpet-mine attachment, and nocturnal beach reconnaissance — reading a shoreline's gradient and composition from the water in the dark. The same ground Archie and Freddie trained on before Tunisia."
Training Records
Instruction conducted at Special Training Schools. Standard curriculum: 10-mile forced marches, unarmed combat, and bridge demolition. Operatives tested for emotional stability. Mental breakage during simulated interrogation results in immediate dismissal.
Operational History
- Report 77: Coastal infiltration of occupied dry docks. Report 82: Extraction of downed RAF pilots via fishing trawler. Report 91: Long-range desert penetration and destruction of Luftwaffe fuel reserves via sabotage.
